EXCITING PROGRAM IN THE MOHAWK VALLEY!
We need 15 people to run this program...Sign up today!
See below for details.
Books for the first presentation are available from Wanda Burch (Johnson Hall), Alessa Wylie (Fort Johnson) and Tricia Shaw (Schoharie Crossing).
Series begins Sunday, September 27, 2pm at Schoharie Crossing SHS Friends of Johnson Hall State Historic Site received a host site grant for Reading Between the Lines, a themed reading program through the New York Council for the Humanities. The grant funds a professional facilitator and provides - for "check-out" and return - fifteen copies of each of four books.
Johnson Hall staff chose the Council for the Humanities' theme "Travel and Tourism Narratives of the Empire State," as a complementary focus to this year's Western Frontier Symposium, "Moving Frontiers - Early Transportation in the Mohawk Valley." This NYCH series illuminates the varied purposes and meanings of travel from New York's Dutch Colonial period to the modern day, using travel as a means to explore the state's geographical diversity.
Audrey Kupferberg, facilitator for the reading program, will begin the series at Schoharie Crossing on Sunday, September 27, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., with an appropriate title by author Carol Sheriff, "The Artificial River: The Erie Canal and the Paradox of Progress, 1817 -1862," a book that examines the impact of the Erie Canal on the lives of ordinary people. Audrey is an author and lecturer at the University of Albany. Her impressive history includes work as consultant, archivist, researcher, film appraiser, lecturer and guest curator for film related assignments and a lengthy list of consultant positions for archives, museums, libraries, universities and individuals with motion picture and television collections.
Additional titles will be available for discussions on three Sunday afternoons in November and December.
Sunday, November 1, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., at Johnson Hall - "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales," by Washington Irving.
Sunday, November 22, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., Fort Johnson - The Second Greatest Disappointment: Honeymooning and Tourism at Niagara Falls by Karen Dubinsky looks at the cultural significance of the Falls, both for its visitors and in our collective imagination.
Sunday, December 13, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., location to be announced - Graham Russell Gao Hodges' Taxi!: A Social History of the New York City Cabdriver, exploring the development of the city through this iconic profession.
